Preview - Xbox One X

It hasn’t been that long since I reviewed the Xbox One S, the 4K slimmed down version of the Xbox One. However, Microsoft have now announced that pre-orders are available for the next version of Xbox, the Xbox One X. Released on 7th November 2017, Microsoft are challenging the PS4 Pro for power.

The One X is the most powerful console ever made. With 40% more power than any other console, you would expect that this is going to be something special.  A 6 Teraflop GPU means that rendering 4K environments and characters to become more realistic than before is now possible. Combined with faster loading times, more powerful graphics processing and a true 4K gaming experience, the One X is the console for the serious gamer, and also for those who love to see and play great looking games on your 4K enabled TV.

The Xbox One X is not an entirely new console, its not like the jump from original xbox to 360, or 360 to Xbox One, but the power within it means that we are now unlikely to see another version of Xbox for a number of years. For some, the subtle differences between this console and the Xbox One S will not be enough to justify the £449 price tag, however my thoughts are that if you can afford it, why wouldn't you want to see your games in the highest possible resolution and quality.

The One X is also smaller again than the One S, and a lot smaller than the original Xbox One. The build quality appears to be based around the One S, which feels like a quality machine and is nice to look at.

At the time of writing, there are a number of games that will be Xbox One X supported, meaning that there will be noticeable improvements in the One X versions, compared to One or One S versions.   All of these games are and will be playable on the One S and OneX. I am really looking forward to Middle Earth Shadow Of War and Star Wars Battlefront 2, so I was pleased to see these on the supported list. I have already started Forza 7 and can look forward to downloading an additional 40gb of 4k graphics when the One X is out.  Microsoft have already demonstrated how easy it is to transfer your games and settings from your old Xbox to the One X, its especially easy if you already use an external hard drive for your games.

If you have been following the development of the latest Xbox, you will know that for a long time the project was known as Project Scorpio. Right now, if you preorder the Xbox One X, you can preorder a special ‘Project Scorpio’ edition featuring engraving on the console and gamepad and a vertical stand for the console. Pre - orders are expected to sell out quickly however, so if you want the limited edition version, you should pre - order now.

Having completed my pre - order as soon as they went live on Game UK, I am looking forward to 7th November when I will be unboxing the new machine. I will let you know my thoughts soon after.

  1. My little nephew has probably got my brother to put his name down for one already! They are expensive, but it sounds like it's worth it!

  5. Looks great. I don't think there's a substitute for device power when it comes to gaming, unfortunately; it's just good that successive models are ramping it up. Great article, thank you!

  7. Wow...thanks for the great review. I didn't even know a new version was coming out. It does confuse me though with all these similar names - couldn't they call it X Box (insert number here)? ;) x

  8. They are great consoles but I think they have a cheek bringing out new consoles every year just before Christmas charging £300 knowing the pressures parents feel to keep up with the latest one then another £35 a year for Xbox live xXx
