Review and Giveaway - My First Scalextric

Scalextric has always been one of favourite toys, from growing up to today, there has always been at least one set around, even if it’s been stored in the loft until one of the little ones has been old enough to play.  I think I was more excited than anyone when ‘My First Scalextric’ was due to arrive for Little J to try. The box is quite compact and reminded me initially of the micro sets. We have had a couple of these over the years, transformers being the last I remember.  Included in the box are a simple track set up, controllers, adapter and 2 reasonably sized BMW cars.

I was pleased to see that the concept that has defined Scalextric for years hasn’t changed at all. The cars still fit into the track slots and have the little conductors that connect to the metal parts of the track to provide the power. This is classic Scalextric. There are now new digital sets that can be set up so that the cars can’t come off the track. Where’s the fun in that? Part of the whole appeal of Scalextric should be mastering the controls to keep your own car on the track, and of course the fun when you can’t and the car goes flying off the edge of the track.

So, with the track taking only about 3 minutes to slot together and the cars ready on the starting lanes, the only decision to make is which car. Yellow or Red?  Little J picked yellow and has used it every time we have played.

He really enjoyed watching his car, that he was controlling, going round and around the track. Even without a speed limitation the cars really do stay on the track a lot more than I remember them doing a few years back. And this is a good thing for the little ones as it can be tricky for little hands to get the cars back into the slots once they have come out. I also really enjoyed the speed at which the cars go around the track and of course there is always a way to make sure the inevitable crash happens that makes for an exciting game.

What you can change with the ‘my first’ set is how far you can depress the trigger on the controllers. This limits the top speed which is perfect for little ones who just want to press and watch the car whizz around the track. This is a simple task with just a small screwdriver required and a turn or two.

To be honest I didn’t limit Little J’s trigger for his first go Scalextric. It didn’t feel fair to take away the fun for him of pressing his trigger too far only to see his car come off the road and crash into the wall.

My first Scalextric Is designed for ages 3 plus, and Little J had no problems with it. Of  course he wouldn’t be able to set it up on his own, and I wouldn’t necessarily leave him to play on his own either as the set is mains operated.

Overall the set is good fun, well priced and is something that all ages can play. If you aren’t already a Scalextric fan then I would expect you would be after some fun with this set. It’s a great starter pack and definitely recommended here.
