Delamere Forest, nestled in the heart of Cheshire, is one of our favourite go-to places for outdoor adventures. As it’s so close to home, it’s become a regular destination for us, especially when the boys fancy heading to a cycle trail. With a purpose-built blue trail, forest paths, and lots of activities for families, it’s the perfect location for a fun and active day out.
Bringing Your Own Bikes to Delamere Forest (or Hire on Site)
One of the big perks of Delamere Forest being nearby is that the boys can easily pack up their own bikes and head off without much fuss. Little J and John always prefer their own bikes, especially as they’re comfortable with the setup and it helps build their confidence as they explore new routes. However, Delamere also offers bike hire services for those who want to travel light or try out a different style of bike.
In fact, hiring bikes is something they are hoping to try on a future visit especially as the forest offers a variety of bikes including mountain bikes and electric bikes, giving them a chance to mix things up and experience cycling in a new way.
What to Expect on the Delamere Forest Blue Trail
The Delamere blue trail is approximately 10km in total, but there's also a 7km shorter loop that still includes the best of the trail’s features. Of the 10km route, around 4km is purpose-built trail, with exciting berms, twists, and turns through the forest - offering a real taste of adventure without being overwhelming.
The rest of the trail is made up of forest tracks and shared paths which are also used by walkers and other forest users, so you do need to stay alert and be respectful of others. But for anyone new to blue trails, this mix makes it the perfect introduction. Compared to our recent cycling trip to Dalby Forest, which felt much more challenging, Delamere's route felt easier, more relaxed, and definitely more accessible for families and younger riders.
Parking and Facilities at Delamere Forest
The main car park is located right by the Visitor Centre, making it really convenient for families. You can easily return to the car or visitor area if you need a break, snacks, or a drink. There’s a great café on site, toilets, and picnic areas – all the essentials for a comfortable day out.
There’s also a map of the cycling trails located near the entrance and on key posts throughout the forest, which helps if you’re new to the area or want to keep track of how far you’ve gone.
Family Fun Beyond the Bikes
While cycling is a big reason we visit Delamere Forest, there’s so much more on offer here for families.
You’ll find the Stick Man Trail, based on the much-loved Julia Donaldson story. This self-guided trail is perfect for younger children and encourages them to engage with the forest through fun signs, activities, and sculptures along the way. It’s ideal for when the kids want to stretch their legs after cycling or just for something a little different.
Delamere Forest is also home to the Gruffalo Spotters Trail, where families can use the free app to hunt for characters from the story. These trails are brilliant at keeping kids entertained and bringing the magic of the forest to life.
If you’re planning a longer stay, you might also want to explore the Go Ape high ropes course, which adds a high-flying adrenaline option to your visit. And for those who enjoy a more relaxed pace, there are walking trails, birdwatching spots, and plenty of places to simply enjoy nature.
A Great Day Out for All Ages
We’ve been to Delamere Forest countless times, and every visit feels different depending on the season, the weather, or the activities we choose. Whether it’s a fast-paced bike ride on the blue trail or a gentle stroll spotting the Stick Man, Delamere really does have something for everyone.
It’s also one of the few places that works for a family of mixed ages and interests. The boys can enjoy the thrill of cycling with the berms and trail sections, while others can relax with a coffee, enjoy the scenery, or take part in the interactive trails.
