We recently visited Scarborough for the weekend. Our main reason for the visit was for John and little J to go cycling in Dalby Forest. It's quite a drive from us so we thought we would see what else we could do in Scarborough with the kids. We were actually surprised and excited to visit as there are lots of family friendly attractions in Scarborough that we could visit.
If you are looking to visit Scarborough here is our guide will help you plan your trip to Scarborough.
Getting to Scarborough
As I mentioned, Scarborough is quite a drive from us, approx 2.5 hours however that didn't put us off. Scarborough is easily accessible by car and train. Direct train services run from York, Leeds, and Hull, making it a convenient choice for a weekend escape. If you're driving, you'll find plenty of parking in the town centre and near the main attractions.
Exploring Scarborough
Stroll around Peasholm Park
We were staying at the Premier Inn North Bay so we began our adventure at the award-winning Peasholm Park, a must-visit Scarborough attraction for families. This beautiful oriental-themed park is perfect for a stroll, with winding paths, tranquil streams, and a picturesque lake. We hired a self pedal boat which was lots of fun.
Climb high on Skytrail
Similar to a Go Ape high ropes course, Skytrail sends you 20ft in the air. You navigate your way through the obstacle course with lovely views of the gardens and lake.
Make a Splash On The Historic Water Chute
There are only 3 of its kind left in the UK so you cannot miss out on a ride on the Victorian Water Chute. Similar to a log flume however the boat is attached to a cord at the top of the drop and pulls you back up once you've hit the water. So much fun for all the family.
Ride the North Bay Railway from Peasholm Station
Peasholm Station is the starting point of the North Bay Railway. This miniature railway has been delighting visitors since 1931 and runs along the scenic North Bay coastline to Scalby Mills. It's a charming and nostalgic experience for children and adults alike.
Discover Marine Life at SEA LIFE Scarborough
Riding from Peasholm Station to Scalby Mills takes you directly to SEA LIFE Scarborough. Home to over 2,500 creatures, including sharks, penguins, seals, and turtles, this aquarium is both educational and exciting. Walk through the ocean tunnel for an immersive underwater experience.
Stroll along North Bay Beach
North Bay is so pretty, think colourful beach huts and golden sands. You really do think you're abroad, it's that pretty. You cannot miss out on a stroll along this beautiful beach.
Alpamare Water Park
After a day of exploring, you can cool off at Alpamare Scarborough. This alpine-themed water park features thrilling slides, a wave pool, and outdoor heated infinity pools with views of the North Sea. There’s also a wellness spa for parents looking to unwind after a busy day.
Step Back in Time at Scarborough Castle
Start your second day with a visit to Scarborough Castle, perched dramatically on the headland between North and South Bay. Managed by English Heritage, the castle boasts panoramic views and over 3,000 years of history. Children will love exploring the ruins and imagining what life was like in medieval times.
Take a Walk to the Lighthouse
From the castle, make your way down to the working lighthouse at the end of Vincent Pier. The views across the harbour are beautiful, and it’s a great photo opportunity. You might even spot some fishing boats unloading their catch.
Traditional Fun at Luna Park
No trip to Scarborough would be complete without a visit to Luna Park. This traditional amusement park, located on the seafront, is packed with classic fairground rides, arcades, and food stalls. It’s a great way to enjoy some light-hearted fun with the family but it can be quite costly. There was only one ride John and little J wanted to go on so we bought tokens which cost £10 for just 1 ride!!
Test Your Skills at Adventure Golf
End the afternoon with a round of adventure golf. There are quite a few mini golf courses in Scarborough each themed and fun for all ages. With tricky holes and obstacles, it's a family favourite.
Dinner by the Sea
Wrap up your weekend with dinner at one of Scarborough’s seafront restaurants. Try traditional fish and chips or opt for a seafood platter while watching the sunset over the bay. I looked forward to fish and chips all weekend and it didn't disappoint.
Attractions Near Scarborough Worth Visiting
If you're extending your break or want to explore the surrounding area, there are some fantastic nearby attractions. We only managed to squeeze two in but we will definitely be back for another visit.
Flamingo Land Resort
Our last visit to Flamingo Land was years ago so we were due a visit. Just under an hour’s drive from Scarborough, Flamingo Land is one of the UK’s top theme parks and zoos. With over 100 rides and attractions, including rollercoasters, a zoo with giraffes and rhinos, and splash zones, it’s an action-packed day out for families. We have visited twice now and operations have been really good both times with minimal waiting time. We may have just been lucky but it definitely was an added bonus that we got to re-ride some of the bigger attractions.
Whitby
A 30-minute drive from Scarborough, Whitby is steeped in history and Gothic charm. Visit the atmospheric Whitby Abbey, climb the 199 steps, and explore quirky shops and seafood restaurants. Don't miss the town's Dracula connections and its famous fish and chips.

Just 40 minutes away, Robin Hood's Bay is a quaint coastal village with steep, winding streets leading to a rugged beach. Great for fossil hunting, scenic coastal walks, and soaking up the charm of the Yorkshire coast.

Only 20 minutes from Scarborough, Filey is perfect for a quieter beach day. Enjoy its long sandy beach, walk the Filey Brigg, or relax with a picnic by the sea.
Dalby Forest
The whole purpose of our trip to Scarborough was to visit Dalby Forest. Firstly it's huge, do not under estimate how much time you will spend here. Located on the southern slopes of the North York Moors, Dalby Forest is ideal for walking, cycling, and wildlife spotting. The forest also offers treetop adventures like Go Ape, playgrounds, picnic areas, and a visitor centre.
Bridlington
Around a 30-40 minute drive, Bridlington offers two beautiful beaches, a bustling harbour, and attractions like the Bridlington Spa and Bempton Cliffs RSPB Reserve, where puffins nest from May to July.

Explore vast moorland, charming villages like Goathland (filming location for Heartbeat and Harry Potter), and enjoy hiking or scenic drives through this dramatic landscape.
Eden Camp Modern History Museum
Set in a former WWII POW camp, this immersive museum offers a fascinating look at wartime Britain with interactive exhibitions and realistic reconstructions.
Pickering
A 40-minute drive inland, Pickering is a charming market town and starting point of the North Yorkshire Moors Railway – a steam train ride through the beautiful countryside to Whitby.
Helmsley & Rievaulx Abbey
Helmsley is perfect for boutique shopping and historic sights. Nearby Rievaulx Abbey is one of the UK's most stunning monastic ruins, tucked away in a peaceful valley.
Where to Stay in Scarborough
Scarborough has accommodation options to suit every budget, from beachfront hotels and guesthouses to holiday parks and family-friendly B&Bs. North Bay is perfect for quieter stays near Peasholm Park, while South Bay is great if you want to be close to the seafront attractions. We stayed in Premier Inn North Bay and it was a 5 minute walk to most North Bay attractions.
