What is the Berlin TV Tower?

The Berlin TV Tower (Berliner Fernsehturm) is a telecommunications tower that rises 368 meters (1,207 feet) above the city, making it the tallest building in Germany and one of the tallest structures in Europe. It was built between 1965 and 1969 by the government of East Germany to demonstrate technological progress and assert the power of the Socialist regime. Today, the tower serves as a hub for communication and an extraordinary observation deck that attracts millions of visitors each year.

The Berlin TV Tower is not just an engineering marvel it’s also a cultural symbol, offering a unique glimpse of Berlin from above. Its revolving restaurant and observation deck provide stunning views of the city’s skyline, including key landmarks such as the Brandenburg Gate, the Reichstag, and the Berlin Cathedral.

History and Architecture of the Berlin TV Tower

The Berlin TV Tower was designed by architect Hermann Henselmann and engineer Jörg Streitparth. The tower was initially constructed by East Germany in an effort to showcase its technological superiority. The spherical observation deck, which sits 204 meters above ground, was designed to resemble a futuristic spacecraft.

When the tower was completed in 1969, it was the tallest structure in Berlin and, at the time, one of the tallest buildings in the world. It was also a significant symbol of the Cold War era. Despite being built by East Germany, the tower became an important landmark for the entire city after reunification in 1990.

The TV Tower’s distinctive architecture includes its ball-shaped observation deck that gives the impression of a spacecraft floating above the city. The tower is built using a concrete core with a steel frame, making it a classic example of modernist architecture.

On arrival you will need to go through security, very like an airport, to check you are safe to ascend. Then it’s into a small lift which takes you quickly to the viewing area. There’s not a lot to see in the lift, but the view when you get out makes up for it.

The View from the Top - 360° Panoramic Views of Berlin

One of the main reasons visitors flock to the Berlin TV Tower is the incredible panoramic view it offers. From the observation deck, which sits at a height of 203 meters, you can see virtually the entire city spread out below. On a clear day, the view gives  you a stunning perspective of Berlin’s mix of historic and modern architecture. Luckily we chose a clear day to go up the tower and the views are really impressive. You can see all the main tourist attractions, the river and as far as the Olympiastadion which is at least 14 km away.

What to Expect From the Views

John had took part in a WWII walking tour before going up the Berlin TV Tower so he enjoyed seeing the landmarks and sites he had seen on foot from above.

Brandenburg Gate

One of Berlin’s most famous landmarks, the Brandenburg Gate can be seen clearly from the observation deck, providing a perfect photo opportunity.

Reichstag Building

The glass dome of the Reichstag is also visible, a striking feature of the German parliament building.

Berlin Cathedral

With its stunning green domes, the Berlin Cathedral is another highlight visible from the tower.

The River Spree

The winding path of the Spree River, which cuts through the city, can be spotted from above, giving a beautiful contrast between the city’s green spaces and urban areas.

Alexanderplatz

The TV Tower is located near Alexanderplatz, making it a central point from which to get a bird’s-eye view of the city’s bustling centre.

There is a bar within the viewing area offering alcoholic and non alcoholic drinks, snacks and tea or coffee. There is also a vending machine for bottles of coke, Fanta and the like. There is a small seating area which was always full when we visited.

The Revolving Restaurant

At a height of 207 meters, the Sphere Restaurant in the Berlin TV Tower offers not just incredible views but also a unique dining experience. The restaurant revolves slowly, ensuring that every diner gets a chance to enjoy a full 360° view of Berlin while they eat.

The Sphere Restaurant serves a variety of dishes, ranging from modern European cuisine to local Berlin specialties. Whether you're looking for a quick coffee or a full meal, it’s a great way to elevate your dining experience while taking in the magnificent cityscape.

If you're planning to dine at the restaurant, it’s recommended to make a reservation in advance, especially during peak tourist seasons. Also, be sure to check the menu and dress code requirements before visiting.

Getting Back Down

To get back down to ground level you use the same lift you arrived in. It’s just as quick taking you back down although you may have wait in a small queue for your turn. As you make your way to the exit there is a gift shop for souvenirs selling all the usual cups, magnets, Lego models of the tower and stationery. There is also a Lego model of the city of Berlin which is really well made and very impressive to look at.
