How to Make Waiting at the Airport More Enjoyable

Disclosure - This is a collaborative post

Long airport waits are an inevitable part of modern travel, but thanks to major upgrades across UK airports, the experience is becoming far more enjoyable. From premium airport lounges and high-tech security to improved dining and entertainment options, airports are investing in ways to help passengers relax before their flights.

We love planning a family holiday but while I personally love the buzz of an early airport morning, not everyone shares my excitement. Take John, for example he loves going on holiday but would happily skip the airport altogether. Luckily, the latest developments mean even reluctant flyers can find comfort and convenience while they wait.

Explore Enhanced Lounges and Priority Services

The airport lounge sector has experienced quite some growth, with numerous new facilities opening across the UK in 2025. Our local, Liverpool John Lennon Airport has expanded its premium lounge to twice its previous size, whilst Bristol Airport has moved its lounge to a new mezzanine location with floor-to-ceiling windows overlooking the eastern apron.

Jersey Airport is introducing its first-ever lounge, and Heathrow Terminal 3 is transforming its Club Aspire space into a Scandi-inspired My Lounge facility. These improved spaces offer far more than comfortable seating, with many featuring runway views, premium dining options, shower facilities, and dedicated quiet zones for business travellers. However, it's worth researching reviews before booking, as some lounges still under-deliver on their promises despite significant investments.

Take Advantage of Smart Airport Tech & Facilities

UK airports are rapidly implementing advanced technology to streamline the passenger experience and reduce waiting stress. The rollout of 3D CT screening technology continues across major airports, with several facilities having successfully installed these systems, including Birmingham, Newcastle, and Gatwick, which completed installation across all security lanes. Manchester, Stansted, and East Midlands airports are introducing the scanners "lane by lane" as part of ongoing construction projects.

These advanced scanners allow passengers to leave liquids and electronics in their bags, speeding up security processing. Additionally, many airports have expanded seating areas, introduced AI chatbots for customer assistance, and improved bar and restaurant facilities to create more comfortable waiting environments.

Make the Most of On-Site Dining & Retail Options

Airport dining has evolved beyond basic fast food offerings. Liverpool Airport recently opened Monty's All Day Diner, an American-style restaurant seating 190 passengers as part of a £9 million investment in enhanced dining facilities. The venue serves everything from loaded breakfast waffles to signature smashed patty burgers and thick milkshakes, creating an authentic diner experience.

Manchester and Newcastle airports have similarly expanded their retail and dining offerings, whilst Leeds and Bristol are developing new dining zones. These improvements reflect a broader trend towards showcasing local flavours and providing quality dining experiences that rival high street establishments.

Plan Activities - Stay Entertained & Productive

Strategic planning can change waiting time into productive or relaxing periods. Consider purchasing day passes for premium lounges, even if you don't have elite status, as many now offer reasonable rates for improved comfort and amenities. Bring entertainment options such as downloaded podcasts, e-books, or travel guidebooks to research your destination.

Many airports now feature art installations, walking routes, and quiet areas perfect for relaxation or work. For those looking for light entertainment, mobile gaming options abound. Whilst you're waiting, you could unwind with some online slots on your phone, but be sure to set a time limit so you don't miss your boarding call.

Alternatively, consider downloading mindfulness apps, exploring terminal walking routes, or simply people-watching from comfortable seating areas with good views of aircraft operations.

The key to enjoyable airport waiting lies in preparation and embracing the available amenities. With airports investing billions in passenger experience improvements, those inevitable delays can become opportunities to relax, dine well, and start your journey in comfort rather than stress.
