Out of the four parks at Walt Disney World, Animal Kingdom is probably my least favourite. We always plan a visit, but it’s not a park we tend to visit multiple times. Having said that, Disney’s Animal Kingdom at Walt Disney World Resort is a place like no other. If you love nature, animals, and adventure, then Animal Kingdom absolutely deserves a spot on your itinerary. It’s not just about the animals either — you’ll find thrilling rides, live shows, and stunning immersive lands. In this Animal Kingdom rides and attractions guide, I’ll take you through everything you need to know, including must-do experiences, height requirements, and tips for planning your day.

Planning Your Visit – Animal Kingdom Rides Overview

Animal Kingdom is divided into several immersive lands, each packed with its own unique attractions and experiences. From flying on the back of a banshee in Pandora to embarking on a wild safari through Africa, having a plan is key to making the most of your visit.

Pandora – The World of Avatar at Animal Kingdom

Pandora – The World of Avatar transports guests to a breathtaking alien world filled with glowing bioluminescent plants, floating mountains, and two of the best rides at Animal Kingdom you won't want to miss.

Na'vi River Journey

Type of Ride - Indoor boat ride through a bioluminescent rainforest.
Hints, Tips or Spoilers - A gentle, slow-moving ride with beautiful visuals. Look out for the incredible Shaman animatronic toward the end, it's one of Disney’s most lifelike ever created!

Avatar Flight of Passage

Type of Ride - 3D flying simulator ride.
Hints, Tips or Spoilers - You'll board a link chair (similar to a motorcycle) and experience the thrill of flying on a banshee over Pandora. The movement, visuals, and even smells make this one of the most immersive rides in Disney history. The queue is stunning and worth seeing at least once.

Africa at Animal Kingdom

The heart of Animal Kingdom, Africa offers some of the park’s biggest adventures and makes you feel like you’re stepping into a real African village.

Kilimanjaro Safaris 

Type of Ride - Open-air safari vehicle ride.
Hints, Tips or Spoilers - No two safaris are the same! Early morning or just before park close are the best times to see active animals. Be ready with your camera!

Lightning Lane - Yes

Festival of the Lion King

Type of Ride – Broadway-style live stage show.
Hints, Tips or Spoilers – A must-see although if I am being honest we have never seen it. I always plan to but never get the chance. The show is jam-packed with incredible singers, acrobats, and dancers bringing the Lion King story to life. A tip is to arrive early for best seating.

Asia at Animal Kingdom

Asia at Animal Kingdom brings ancient ruins, lush jungles, and high-speed thrills. Here, you'll find one of the park’s biggest roller coasters and a few splash-worthy adventures.

Kali River Rapids

Type of Ride - Whitewater rafting ride.
Hints, Tips or Spoilers - You WILL get wet, sometimes soaked! Consider wearing ponchos and using the free lockers for valuables.

Expedition Everest - Legend Of The Forbidden Mountain

Type of Ride - High-speed roller coaster with sudden drops, backward sections, and a Yeti encounter.
Hints, Tips or Spoilers - Look out for the Yeti! This ride is thrilling but doesn't have any inversions. It’s stunning at night with the mountain all lit up.

Maharajah Jungle Trek

Type of Ride – Self-guided walking trail through the habitats.
Hints, Tips or Spoilers – Another attraction we've planned to do over the years but have never got around to. See tigers, bats, and beautiful exotic birds up close. It's peaceful and rarely crowded.

DinoLand U.S.A. at Animal Kingdom

DinoLand U.S.A. is now mostly closed and is currently undergoing a refurbishment into the new area, Tropical Americas.

Dinosaur

Type of Ride - Dark ride through a prehistoric jungle.
Hints, Tips or Spoilers - Loud, bumpy, and sometimes scary for younger kids. You’ll be on a mission to rescue a dinosaur before a meteor hits.
Min Height - 40"

Discovery Island at Animal Kingdom

At the centre of the park, Discovery Island is where you’ll find the famous Tree of Life and a few hidden gems.

Tips for Visiting Animal Kingdom

  • Animal Kingdom is HUGE and very spread out. Wear comfortable shoes and stay hydrated.
  • Rope drop (arriving before opening) is key for riding Flight of Passage with minimal wait.
  • Afternoon storms are common — pack ponchos and plan indoor shows during that time.
  • Nighttime is stunning in Pandora, so don’t miss seeing it lit up after dark.

Are there any rides at Animal Kingdom for toddlers?

Yes! As mentioned above in our Animal Kingdom guide, Na'vi River Journey, Kilimanjaro Safaris, and Maharajah Jungle Trek are great for little ones.

Does Animal Kingdom have fireworks?

No, Animal Kingdom does not have a nightly fireworks show to avoid disturbing the animals.

What’s the best time to visit Pandora?

First thing in the morning or late at night. Flight of Passage often has long lines, so aim to rope drop or purchase an Individual Lightning Lane.

Is Animal Kingdom a full-day park?

As I said earlier it's not our favourite park, however to fit everything in you would need at least one full day.
