Some shows stay with you forever, and Mary Poppins is one of those. Having loved Mary Poppins since I was a child and loving all things Disney, this was a show I had been counting down to for almost a year. We booked tickets to see the Mary Poppins UK tour well in advance, and from the moment we took our seats, I knew this was going to be something truly special.
Mary Poppins is a classic. Although I had seen the musical before, I couldn’t wait to experience it again. Disney productions have a way of transporting you completely, and they never fail to feel mesmerising and magical. John was equally excited after loving Aladdin musical and The Lion King when we saw them a few years ago. Our expectations were high and Mary Poppins exceeded every single one of them.
What is Mary Poppins About? (For Those Who Haven’t Seen the Film)
If you’ve somehow never seen the film or stage show, Mary Poppins tells the story of the Banks family, who live at number 17 Cherry Tree Lane in London. When their household descends into chaos, the mysterious and magical nanny Mary Poppins arrives, quite literally from the sky. Mary Poppins brings order, imagination, and joy back into their lives.
Through songs, dancing and magic Mary teaches the Banks children, Jane and Michael, that a little imagination can make everyday life extraordinary. Alongside her chimney sweep friend Bert, Mary Poppins reminds the adults too that life shouldn’t be taken quite so seriously. It’s a story full of warmth, nostalgia, and timeless messages that resonate just as much with adults as they do with children.
The Current UK Touring Cast
The current UK tour cast of Mary Poppins are phenomenal from start to finish.
Mary Poppins herself… wow. She was unbelievable throughout. Not only was her singing flawless, but her portrayal of Mary was absolutely spot on. She was poised, playful, firm when needed, and full of magic. She embodied everything Mary Poppins should be, and more.
Bert was everything I had hoped for, he was cheeky, charming, full of energy and warmth. Bert completely owned the stage every time and his performance during Step in Time was fantastic.
Jane and Michael were utterly adorable and such strong performers for their age. They brought real heart to the show and made you completely believe in the Banks family’s journey.
I also have to mention Mr and Mrs Banks, the actors who played them were brilliant together. Their relationship, character growth, and emotional relationship were handled beautifully, adding depth and relatability that adults in the audience will particularly appreciate.
An Emotional and Magical Experience
I’ll be honest I felt emotional throughout the entire performance, but my emotions truly got the better of me during the first rendition of Feed the Birds. The moment the music started, I sobbed.
That emotion continued all the way through the second half. I couldn’t stop crying they were happy tears though, it was the music, the nostalgia, the magic, it all just hit me at once. I have only ever cried once watching a musical and that was during Wicked.
By the time Mary Poppins left the stage and flew over the audience up into the circle, I was completely overwhelmed. It was breathtaking, emotional, and utterly unforgettable.
Disney Magic at Its Very Best
The staging, costumes, choreography, and special effects were flawless. From the iconic flying scenes to the detailed set design, everything worked together to create a truly immersive experience. This production captures everything people love about Disney theatre, it’s grand, magical, emotional, and polished to perfection.
It’s rare to leave a theatre feeling so uplifted and full of joy, but Mary Poppins did exactly that. It reminded me why I fell in love with Disney in the first place.
Final Thoughts - Is Mary Poppins Worth Seeing?
Without a doubt, yes. Whether you’re a lifelong Disney fan, grew up loving the film, or are introducing Mary Poppins to the next generation, this show is an absolute must-see.
It's sad that the Mary Poppins UK tour is over as it's the most magical show I’ve ever seen. I will definitely be catching it next time it comes to the UK, it's heartwarming, nostalgic, emotional, and practically perfect in every way.
