How to Beat the January Blues: Tips for Blue Monday and Beyond

This post was last updated January '26

Blue Monday, the third Monday of January, is often referred to as the "saddest day of the year." If you’ve never heard of Blue Monday, it’s believed to be the day when many people feel down or low in spirits. This makes sense as January comes right after the excitement of Christmas and New Year, and the days are short and dark. I have shared some ideas on how to keep busy in January as I know energy can be low. I find keeping busy really helps in January, especially as it’s my least favourite month.. If you’re feeling a little blue this January, here are some helpful tips to lift your mood and beat the January blues.

Get Outside for Fresh Air

On darker days, it’s natural to want to curl up on the sofa, but getting outside for a walk can do wonders for your mood. Fresh air and light exposure help clear your mind and energise you. Even short walks in the park can make a noticeable difference in how you feel. We have been aiming for at least three - four walks this month and it really has helped, especially stopping off for a hot drink along the way.

Enjoy Some Retail Therapy

I'm guessing we are like most and do quite a lot of shopping online however heading to the shops in January can also lift your spirits. Many stores still have great January sale bargains, and finding something you want or need at a reduced price can give you a little boost. Shopping mindfully can be a small treat that brightens a gloomy day.

Plan a Short Break or Trip

Last year we enjoyed some much needed Winter sun in Tenerife, it really did help having something to look forward to. We loved it so much we planned another Winter sun break this year too. Whether it’s a weekend getaway or a big holiday, planning a trip gives you something positive to focus on. Even browsing online for affordable flights or hotel deals can lift your mood.

Set Positive Goals and Try Something New

I have made myself a goals-for-2026 list and January is the perfect month for resolutions. However, these are often focused on things we want to change about ourselves, like weight or exercise routines. Instead, why not try something positive and fun? Learning a new language, joining a dance class, or picking up a hobby can bring joy and a sense of accomplishment.

Connect with Family and Friends

When we feel down, we often want to isolate ourselves. However, spending time with loved ones is one of the best ways to feel better. Even a simple coffee catch-up with a friend or family member can lift your mood and help you feel supported. I usually fill my January calendar with 'catch up' dates as Christmas time can be very busy. John and I will also start planning some date nights for the first few months.

Pile of books on a bookcase for reading and self-care

Prioritise “Me Time”

It’s easy to put everyone else first, but self-care is crucial, especially in January. I have spoken about this recently how I now have a morning routine which helps me start my day positively. Take time for yourself whether it’s a weekly pamper night, early bedtime, or finally reading that book you’ve been meaning to get to. Setting small, achievable routines can make a big difference in mental wellbeing. I have shared one of my goals of reading 30 books this year, which I am really looking forward to. It only works out to just 20 pages per night which should be easily manageable and rewarding

Remember, You’re Not Alone

If you’re feeling low this January, remember that the January blues are common. Reaching out to someone, a friend, family member, or professional can help. Small changes, self-care, and connecting with loved ones are all key ways to improve your mood and start the year on a positive note.
