A Trip To Blackpool With Virgin Experiences.

Edit this post
Blackpool is a place that whenever I hear the name it takes me back 30 years to when I was little and I would visit Blackpool on the train with my Mum and Dad. It used to seem so far, like it was a million miles away when the reality was we could have reached it in less than a hour by car. I think because both John and I have fond memories of visiting Blackpool we have tried to visit quite a few times a year with the boys. You may have read a few months ago we visited Blackpool Sealife and last weekend we were back at the seaside resort thanks to Virgin Experiences. We were invited to choose an experience and we all agreed that a short break to Blackpool would be a perfect way to end the Summer.

The One Night Family Coastal Escape includes one night stay in a superior family room at The Big Blue Hotel and 4 x Pleasure Beach Wristbands. We have stayed at The Big Blue before but it was many years ago so this was little J's first visit. He absolutely loves staying in hotels so he was very excited when we arrived and also as it is called The Big Blue Hotel, as you can imagine it is painted blue, his favourite colour.

We arrived a little early to the hotel but we thought we would check to see if our room was ready and thankfully it was. Check in was very simple. We were asked when we would like to visit the Pleasure Beach, we had already decided we would go in the next day. We were told about breakfast and given directions to our room. We were on the 3rd floor.

The room was large and perfect for a family of four. The boys had their own area with bunkbeds, two tv's, Playstation 3 and a Snakes and Ladders board on the wall.

Bed Is Huge

Free Wifi

John and I had a huge bed and a sofa too, which I think may have turned in to a sofa bed but we didn't try it out. The usual tea making facilities were available, an iron and board, hairdryer and the most important thing especially when travelling with a teen and a blogger, free Wifi.

Checking Out The View

The Big One and The Big Dipper

Our view from the room was amazing. We could see The Big One, The Big Dipper, and the new Red Arrows ride.

We headed in to Blackpool after we had settled in. We took a short walk up the Golden Mile to play Adventure Golf. The boys love mini golf and we all get very competitive. To spice it up we had a £10 prize for the winner.

Big J Won

Before it was time for bed the boys played Snakes and Ladders in their bedroom area.

Little J was the first to go asleep he looked so comfortable in his bed.

The next morning we were excited to hit the rides at The Pleasure Beach but before we did we headed to breakfast. Upon check in we were told that the hotel was full and therefore breakfast would usually be very busy between 9-10am. We got to the restaurant about 8:30am and it was busy but as it is self service it was fine.

There was an wide choice of hot and cold food, tea, coffee, juices. We all opted for the hot buffet style breakfast. It was delicious with a choice of sausage, eggs, bacon, hash browns, beans and tomatoes. If you wanted toast you could us the toaster machine to make your own.

Once we had finished our breakfast we went to reception to pick up our wristbands for the park. We all received a wristband each and park entry tickets. We needed the park entry tickets to allow us to use a fast track entrance in to the Pleasure Beach. It is situated just at the side of the hotel and is only for hotel guests. It opens at 10am and closes at 11:30am.

Checkout wasn't until 11am but we wanted to try and beat the queues so we checked out at 9:50am. The car is allowed to stay in the car park till 1pm but I suggest if you are heading in to the Pleasure beach you might want to move it as you won't want to trek back the hotel in the middle of the day to move your car. The car parks will already be busy by then. I guess the 1pm is ideal for those who used their wristbands the day before.

The side entrance in to the Pleasure Beach brought us in to the Pleasure Beach just by The Big One. This didn't open till 10:30am but we got in the queue anyway.

The rest of our day in Blackpool was spent hopping from one ride to the next. It was lovely seeing how much little J has grown and wanted to go on 'big boys rides' just like his older brother.

He went on The Avalanche which is a thrill ride and he only just made the minimum height line. He laughed all the way around and wanted to go on it again . . which he did later on. He really has no fear.

Big J and John went on the bigger rides as we watched on. We are becoming a family of thrill seekers by the day and would much prefer a day at the Theme Park than anywhere else.

The Boys Found A Vimto Shop

Nickleodeon Land

Meeting A Hero

Before it was time to go we had a game of Hook a Duck and Big J won a Plankton.

Virgin Experiences made our break so simple. Everything was taken care of we just had to turn up. As you can probably tell from our blog we love making memories and the few days in Blackpool gave us lots of laughs and memories we will remember for a long time.

Our experience voucher was valid until 4th November which is the date the short break has to be completed by. It is advisable to book at least 4 weeks before your stay to avoid disappointment.

If a theme park break isn't your thing there are so many other experiences to choose from, you will be spoilt for choice.

  28. Have had several visits and weekends at Blackpool over the year. Many nice memories. Though unfortunately some sadness when Blackpool effected /affected by Economic downturn / decline. Quality of Life is impacted negatively for many during an Economic downturn.

Nice to see some improvements in Blackpool over the last few years. I wonder just what is in store for Blackpool in the future. I can recall times when Entertainment on each pier, Theatre, etc was fantastic.

  29. It looks like you guys had a great time! We used to go to Blackpool for a weekend or two every single year, but we've not been since we had Oscar. I'm hoping to take the kids to see the illuminations later on in the month as they deserve a treat at the mo :)

  34. I've never been to Blackpool, it's not to far away from me in south Wales so I don't know why I haven't, it looks like you all had a fun time, the hotel looks lovely and free WiFi is always a bonus, although a necessity these days, we want camping last summer and my 13 year old son and 5 year old daughter were shocked there wasn't any WiFi for their tablets and phones, we took their portable dvd players for the night and went out in the days xxx
