How to Keep Fit in Winter 2026 - Simple Ways to Stay Active and Motivated

Last updated January 2026

As the temperatures drop and the days grow shorter, staying active during winter can feel like an uphill battle. I always start January with the best intentions, but on cold, dark mornings it can be a real struggle to crawl out from under the duvet. However, last year I pushed through January and I am entering 2026 three stone lighter, fitter and stronger than I have ever been. If you’re looking for simple, realistic ways to keep fit in winter 2026, here’s what has helped me stay active and motivated during the colder months.

Maintaining your fitness during winter is so important, not just for physical health, but for mental wellbeing too. Over the past year, I’ve learned that having a realistic and achievable routine makes all the difference. I found a healthy morning routine that works for me, and it’s been a brilliant way to beat the January blues and keep me on track throughout 2025.

Staying active during winter doesn’t have to mean intense workouts or unrealistic goals. With a simple morning routine, a mix of indoor and outdoor exercise, and a focus on consistency, it’s possible to keep fit in winter and feel your best well beyond January.

Start with a Healthy Morning Routine in Winter

Your morning really does set the tone for the rest of your day. Creating a healthy winter morning routine doesn’t need to be complicated, but small, consistent habits can make a big difference.

Hydrate First Thing

Start your day with a glass of water to rehydrate after a night’s sleep. I often add a slice of lemon for a refreshing boost and include an electrolyte to help keep my energy levels up during winter.

Stretch or Try Gentle Yoga

Gentle stretching or a short yoga session can wake up your body and prepare you for the day ahead. Focus on poses that improve circulation and flexibility, such as downward dog or cat-cow stretches.

Move Early

If you can, try to fit in some movement first thing. This doesn’t need to be intense, a 20-minute brisk walk, indoor cycling, or simple bodyweight exercises like squats and push-ups work really well.

I set my alarm for 30 minutes before everyone else wakes up and start my morning with a 20-minute indoor walk. It genuinely helps me feel more energised and ready for the day ahead.

Fuel Your Body

A nutritious breakfast will keep you feeling full and focused. In winter, I love porridge topped with berries, nuts and a drizzle of honey, it’s warming, filling and packed with goodness.

Creating a consistent morning routine makes it much easier to stay active throughout winter and stick to your fitness goals.

Embrace Outdoor Activities to Keep Fit in Winter

Cold weather often makes us want to stay indoors, but getting outside during winter can do wonders for both physical and mental health. If weekdays are busy, try to make the most of weekends by wrapping up warm and heading outdoors.

Walking or Hiking

We love a good outdoor walk and we are lucky to have so many lovely walks in the North West. Explore local trails or parks. The crisp winter air can be so refreshing, and walking is a low-impact exercise suitable for all fitness levels.

Winter Sports

If you’re lucky enough to have access to snow - skiing, snowboarding, or ice skating are excellent ways to stay fit.

Running

Invest in good-quality winter running gear, including thermal leggings and gloves, and take advantage of quieter streets during the winter months.

Indoor Fitness Ideas in Winter

For days when venturing outside feels impossible, there are plenty of indoor fitness options to keep you moving.

Home Workouts

You don't have to pay for workout subscriptions. YouTube has lots of online videos offering a range of workouts, from HIIT to Pilates.

Join a Class

Many gyms and fitness centres run special winter programs. From dance classes to spin sessions, the group atmosphere can help you stay motivated.

Try Something New

Winter is a great time to experiment with activities like indoor rock climbing, swimming, or even martial arts.

Set Realistic Winter Fitness Goals

Setting achievable goals can provide the motivation you need to stay consistent. I've set my targets too high in the past and set myself to fail. Start slow by running a certain number of miles each week, mastering a yoga pose, or simply staying active for 30 minutes a day, tracking your progress will keep you accountable. Use fitness apps or a journal to log your activities and celebrate milestones.

How to Stay Consistent With Fitness During Winter

Consistency is key to everything including maintaining fitness during winter. Create a schedule that works for you and stick to it. Remind yourself of the benefits of staying active, and don’t be too hard on yourself if you miss a day, just get back on track the next day.

I am really hoping I can continue on this journey and look forward to feeling the benefits. If you are also trying to keep fit this Winter, enjoy the journey and good luck
