Disclosure - We were invited to The Lowry to watch The Addams Family. All thoughts and opinions are our own. We have including photographs from The Addams Family On Tour gallery.
Last night we headed over to The Lowry in Salford to see The Addams Family musical, and what a night it was! We’ve seen this show before, so we thought we knew exactly what to expect, but this cast absolutely blew us away from start to finish. From the moment the curtain went up, it was packed with laugh-out-loud moments, incredible vocals, and plenty of fun.
The story follows the wonderfully weird Addams family as Wednesday, their dark and slightly twisted daughter, falls in love with a perfectly 'normal' boy named Lucas. She invites him and his parents over for dinner, but, of course, nothing goes to plan. What follows is a night of family secrets, misunderstandings, and hilarious chaos, all wrapped up in big musical numbers and a whole lot of kooky charm.
The Cast That Stole the Show
One of the things that makes live theatre so special is the cast, and this cast of The Addams Family was nothing short of amazing.
Ricardo Afonso as Gomez Addams
I remember last time we saw The Addams Family, Gomez was the hughlight of the show for us and I was hoping it would be the same this time. It was. Ricardo Afonso as Gomez was absolutely perfect. He was full of charm, wit, and larger-than-life personality. Gomez seems like such a fun role to play but Ricardo brought so much heart to it too. You could see his love for Morticia in every scene, and the way he worked the audience was brilliant. He had us laughing one moment and feeling genuinely emotional the next.
Alexandra Burke as Morticia Addams
We last saw Alexandra Burke in Sister Act and she was incredible so we couldn't wait to see her as Morticia. Wow. She was everything Morticia should be elegant, graceful, and sexy! Alexandra’s voice is incredible, and she gave Morticia this commanding presence that made it impossible to take your eyes off her. We loved the chemistry between her and Ricardo and their scenes together were some of the best.
A Shout-Out to Wednesday’s Understudy
On the night we visited Wednesday was played by her understudy, Maria Garrett. I have to say, she was fantastic. Stepping into such an iconic role is no easy task, but Maria nailed it. She had Wednesday’s dry humour down perfectly, and her vocals were stunning.
Lurch - The Unexpected Scene Stealer
We can’t forget Lurch, played by Dickon Gough. I think Dickon played Lurch the last time we saw The Addams Family and I remember how mesmerising he was. The minute he walks on stage you can't help but laugh. He barely says a word but his facial expressions, his slow movements, and his perfectly timed moments are hilarious. Lurch might be the quietest member of the family, but he definitely makes one of the loudest impressions.
A Brilliant Supporting Cast
The rest of the cast were also amazing and deserve a mention. Lesley Joseph brought so much fun and mischief to Grandma, and Clive Rowe as Uncle Fester was warm, funny, and completely lovable. The ensemble cast, playing the Addams ancestors, kept the energy high throughout the show and really brought the big musical numbers to life.
Why We Love Seeing Shows at The Lowry
The Lowry is one of our favourite theatres in the North West. It’s easy to get to, there’s a great atmosphere, and every seat in the house has a fantastic view of the stage. The staff are always friendly and helpful, and there’s plenty of space to grab a pre-show snack or drink. Seeing The Addams Family here made the whole evening even more special.
Perfect for a Family Night Out
If you’re looking for a night out that works for the whole family, The Addams Family musical is a great choice. It’s got humour for the kids (and the big kids!), brilliant music, and just the right amount of spooky fun. We all left with huge smiles on our faces, singing crazier than you to ourselves and that’s exactly what a family night at the theatre should be.
Don’t Miss It!
You can catch The Addams Family at The Lowry until 16th August, before the tour heads to Canterbury next week and then finishes in Blackpool. Whether you’ve seen it before or it’s your first time, I can promise you that this cast will win you over completely.
Our Thoughts
We went in expecting to enjoy the show but this cast made it something truly special. Ricardo Afonso’s Gomez was full of charm, Alexandra Burke’s Morticia was stunning, Maria Garrett as Wednesday’s understudy was brilliant, and Dickon Gough’s Lurch had us laughing everytime he came on stage. Add in catchy songs like Crazier Than You and the warm welcome we always receive at The Lowry amde this one of our favourite theatre night outs this year.
