If you're planning a family break to Scarborough, there are plenty of attractions to keep the kids entertained but one that always tops our list is Flamingo Land Resort. We have only visited Flamingo Land once prior to our latest visit but we really enjoyed it. We were especially eager to ride Sik, the park’s newest rollercoaster.
Even though we visited during the school holidays, the weather was a little grey and drizzly but for us, that worked in our favour. The park was really quiet and most of the rides had wait times of just 10 -15 minutes, making it the perfect day for theme park fun without the long queues.
Whether you’re looking for adrenaline-fuelled rides, animal encounters, or a day packed with fun and memories, Flamingo Land is a perfect day out for families visiting Scarborough. Here's what we got up to on our most recent visit.
Sik – The New Standout Thrill Ride
One of the biggest draws for us this time was Sik, Flamingo Land’s latest and most impressive rollercoaster. We’d seen a lot of hype online and the boys couldn’t wait to give it a go. Themed around the SikSilk fashion brand, this ride is bold, fast, and thrilling from start to finish. It features multiple inversions, quick drops and high-speed twists perfect for our little adrenaline junkie. If you're a fan of high-octane rides, this is a must-do.
Despite being one of the newest attractions in the park, the queue was no longer than 15 minutes likely thanks to the unpredictable weather. They managed to ride it twice, and it definitely lived up to the excitement. For teens and adults, Sik will be their highlight.
Velocity – Feel the Speed
Another firm favourite of ours is Velocity, the UK’s first and only motorbike launch coaster. This ride simulates the feeling of riding a superbike as you’re launched from 0 to 60mph in seconds. You’re strapped in on a bike-style seat, leaning forward just like a real motorcyclist.
It’s a unique ride experience that never fails to impress, and the thrill of the launch gives you that instant rush. If you are familiar with the rides at Alton Towers, this has the same feel to it as Rita. Again, the short queues meant we got to ride multiple times, which was a huge bonus.
Kumali - A Looping Adventure
Kumali is one of the park’s signature coasters, offering loops, corkscrews and plenty of thrills. Named after one of the zoo’s lions, this ride features a suspended track that gives you the feeling of flying through the air.
It’s a smooth yet intense coaster that’s a hit with adrenaline seekers, and another ride that didn’t have a queue longer than 10 minutes. If you're building up to Sik or Velocity, Kumali is a great mid-level thrill ride that combines height and speed with amazing views across the park.
Mumbo Jumbo - A Record Breaking Rollercoaster
Another thrilling highlight at Flamingo Land is Mumbo Jumbo, a record-breaking rollercoaster that once held the title for the world’s steepest drop. With a 112° vertical descent, this ride is not for the faint-hearted! Mumbo Jumbo delivers twists, turns, and inversions that keep you guessing from start to finish. Despite its compact layout, it packs a serious punch and is a must-ride for thrill-seekers. The unique track design and smooth ride make it a favourite for older kids and adults alike, and on our visit, the boys were able to walk straight on without queuing while I watched from the ground as it looks to crazy for me!
Hero - Take Flight Like a Superhero
NEVER AGAIN! If you’ve ever wondered what it feels like to fly, Hero at Flamingo Land gives you that exact sensation. This unique flying coaster positions riders face-down in a superhero pose, offering a completely different perspective as you soar, swoop, and twist through the air. It’s a compact but intense ride, with sharp turns and smooth inversions that make you feel like you’re gliding over the park. While it’s not the tallest or fastest ride, the flying position makes Hero an unforgettable experience and not one the boys would like to repeat. It's a ride especially for teens and adventurous adults. Even with short wait times during our visit they did not want to go on again.
Family Rides for All Ages
Flamingo Land isn’t just about big thrill rides. With traditional theme park rides such as a carousel, ferris wheel, small rollercoasters and the balloon race, there’s plenty for younger children and families too. The family area was very quiet during our visit, so we could easily hop on and off rides without any waiting at all.
Zoo and Animal Experiences
What makes Flamingo Land truly unique is that it's not just a theme park, it's also home to a fantastic zoo. With over 140 species of animals, there’s plenty to explore between rides. We saw lions, giraffes, hippos, zebras, meerkats, reptiles, birds, and many more.
One of the highlights of our zoo experience was taking the Flamingo Land Zoo Train. This mini train ride takes you through some of the animal enclosures, offering a relaxed way to see the animals up close and enjoy a break from walking.
There are regular animal talks and feeding times, and you can also upgrade your experience with animal encounters or keeper-for-a-day sessions.
Food and Facilities
There are several places to eat inside Flamingo Land, offering everything from burgers and chips to pizza, sandwiches, and ice cream. There are also plenty of picnic benches if you prefer to bring your own lunch, and indoor seating areas to escape the rain.
Toilets and baby-changing facilities were clean and easily accessible throughout the park, and there were plenty of sheltered areas where we could sit down during the showers.
Why Flamingo Land is Perfect if You're Visiting Scarborough
If you're planning a Scarborough weekend break with kids, Flamingo Land is just a 30 -40 minute drive away, making it an ideal day trip. The mix of exciting rides, zoo animals, and quieter midweek queues (especially if the weather is less than perfect) means you can really make the most of your day.
Whether you're travelling with little ones or thrill-seeking teens like us, Flamingo Land offers something for everyone and it’s a brilliant way to add some adventure to your Scarborough holiday.
Our Thoughts
Despite the overcast skies, our trip to Flamingo Land was one of the best yet due to smaller queue times. We got to ride everything we wanted and the boys tried out the brand new Sik coaster, which they loved.
Flamingo Land may seem a little dated in places and not up to par with other theme parks in the UK. The new ride Sik was really enjoyed by the boys but for me it just didn't seem to fit. Having said that I am hoping Sik is the start of a new look to the theme park and that it receives a fresh refurb that i think is much needed.
