Crown Carveries - The Greenhills Review

Last week to help celebrate my Dads birthday we were invited to our local Crown Carveries pub restaurant. We have visited The Greenhills many times over the years and have always been impressed with the food and also the pub itself.

Having said that we haven't been for a while so it was nice to visit again. We arrived at 4pm on a Friday afternoon and found a table quite quickly. On a Sunday it is very very busy and as you cannot book a table we have often waited over a hour as usually there are 12 of us eating. Smaller groups may find it easier to grab a table.

Crown Carveries

We chose a table and got little J's highchair. We browsed the menu which had lots of your pub classics including Half Roast Chicken, Shepherds Pie and Pork Sausages. We all chose a carvery including big J who usually goes for something else but it looked and smelt delicious.

If you haven't visited a Crown Carveries before it is very simple. You choose your table, choose your food, pay at the till and if buying a carvery you will be given a ticket to hand to the chef.

Crown Carveries

There was a choice of 3 meats. Gammon, Beef and Turkey. You can choose a yorkshire pudding too. Once your meat is carved you are free to help yourself to as much sides as you want. Today's vegetables where swede, cauliflower cheese, peas, carrots and onions in gravy. There is a choice of mashed potato or roast potato or both if you feel like. You can even have chips, baked beans, mushy peas and curry sauce too.

Having the choice of beans and chips appeals to both big and little J as they are not too fussed on vegetables except for carrots.

I always choose turkey when we eat at a carvery.  We were given lots of meat and it was really tasty.

Once we had finished our meals, our plates were taken away and we asked for our desserts. You can upgrade your carvery to a meal deal which includes a dessert. You have the choice of bottomless ice-cream, strawberry angel delight, strawberry trifle or apple and blackberry pie.

Crown Carveries

The bottomless ice-cream is a big hit with the kids as they can go up to the ice-cream machine as many times as they like and help themselves to the ice-cream and sauces.

We had brought a small birthday cake so we could sing happy birthday to my Dad and they didn't have any problems with this.

For 5 adult carvery meal deals, 1 children's carvery, 3 pepsi's, 2 pints of lager, 1 coffee and 1 fruit shoot the bill came to just under £50 which is really reasonable. If you choose to dine on a Sunday it is more expensive for the carvery so please do keep that in mind.

What We Loved

The vegetables and potatoes were really fresh and tasty. Some carveries we have been to in the past the vegetables have been dry.

We received a generous amount of meat which again makes a nice change from other carveries we have been to.

It was quite quiet for a Friday afternoon.

Carvery is just £4.39 Monday to Saturday and £5.99 for a meal deal.

What Could Improve

Refillable drinks. More and more restaurants are now offering free refills. We spend quite a lot on drinks when eating out so for us we would definitely choose a restaurant which offers free refills to it's customers.

The price increases on a Sunday for a carvery.

More selection of vegetables such as brussels or parsnips.

  19. Wow that certainly does look like a hearty meal!!! I agree with you about the drinks - drinks are expensive so I never bother buying them anymore, I just go to tap water! If there were free refills I'd be more likely to consider them.
