Tech Tuesday - 4K Definition The Future Of Streaming

You may have recently read my review of the Xbox One S in which I talk about the difference I have seen with 4K and HDR definitions.  One of the features is the ability to stream HDR and 4K definition through the Xbox One S with 4K compatible providers like Netflix. As part of the StreamTeam, I have written recently about Stranger Things - the superb TV series with a retro feel to it. We watched that in 1080p through Netflix and the quality was brilliant. If I had waited a few months until we got the new 4K TV then we could have watched it in 4K definition on Netflix.

There are some really good 4K content on Netflix, however what really caught my eye was Breaking Bad. We love Breaking Bad and binge watched it a couple of years ago when we discovered the series.  I have been thinking about watching it again and now that its available in 4K, I have watched the first few episodes again.

I wont go into detail about how good the series is, as if you don't know that already, then you shouldn't be reading this, you should be watching episode 1.  I want to consider how its possible to stream in 4K definition.  4K is four times the resolution of 1080p.  1080p is what has been considered as full HD for some time now.  Thinking about that in terms of data, that's four times the data for each second of viewing.  We have a good reliable internet service at home, however what's really impressive is the size and capability of the servers at Netflix that enable the stream to come through with no buffering, no pixellating, no sound issues and that really impressive picture quality that you would expect for anything running in 4K.

I also think its important to consider that 4K Streaming is only included with the Premium package from Netflix - but thats just £8.99 per month and the subscription can be used on four devices at once. I remember hiring videos from Blockbuster video until not so very long ago, and if memory serves me well it was around £2.99 for the privilege of borrowing the tape for two days!  When you put that into context with the amount of content available on Netflix, for me its clear what I would rather be doing.

For some people 4K wont mean anything and some people may even claim not to see any difference from 1080p HD, however if you like your quality, and you like your films and TV, then you have to check out Netflix 4K offerings.  I cant find a better selection anywhere else.
